Silvesterrun - 5000m

On the last day of the year there are a lot of running events in Austria. Last year I took part in a charity run. A sponsor paid a small amount for every loop that was run, therefore I tried to run quiet a lot of loops to collect some money. In total I was running about 32 km, together with the training in the morning it was slightly more than 6 hours of training that day. A bit too much and as a result I had to stay in bed the first days of the new year.
To avoid the same mistake like last year I have chosen to start in a traditional Silvesterrun, a 5k street race in Zillingdorf. Some other runners of my club also took part in this race.

The course was pretty fast, 5 very flat loops with 1000m each on asphalted roads. The weather was also quite good with about 6°C - almost perfect running conditions.
A few good runners were on the start, therefore my goal for the race was to finish in the top group. In the first round it was a group of 6 runners that passed the finish line together, I was running among the last in that group. At the beginning of the 2nd loop the first runner increased the speed a bit and made a small gap to the followers. As I recognised that, I made a short spurt to overtake the others and to get back in contact with the leading runner. We passed the finishline for the second time together, but the group began splitting up.
In the third loop I had to slow down a bit, maybe it was because of my spurt or because the speed was a bit too high for me. The gap to the leading runner increased steadily, but running on second position I also managed to widen the gap to my followers. In the last loop I tried to catch up with the leader, but he also increased his speed and the gap stayed almost the same until the finish.
I finished second with a time of 15:42 - 9 seconds behind the leader. I am quite satisfied with this time, my record on a track race is 15:43, according to my Garmin watch it was a real 5k race. Taking into account that this race was the third training of consecutive hard (intense) trainings the last 1 1/2 days the result was quite good.
My New Years pledge for 2010 is to beat my record on a 5k race on the track and stay below 15:40.

Feuerwerk      Happy New Year 2010!
